Machu Picchu One Day Package

MACHU PICCHU ONE DAY PACKAGE – OVERVIEW

The Machu Picchu One Day Package allows you to discover the beauty and magnificence of “The Lost City of the Incas”. Captivating, mysterious, and mystic are some of the adjectives used to describe this great Inca city. Moreover, it is a place filled with peace, energy, and harmony where time seems to stop. For this reason, we recommend you to come and see for yourself why millions of people have chosen Machu Picchu as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World!

In addition, Machu Picchu is considered a master piece of architecture and engineering. It is the most representative architectural example of Peruvian culture and one of the most important and acclaimed archeological sites in the world. Hence, Machu Picchu is one of the few places in America that was declared both Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Besides, it is located in the region of Cusco, in the Urubamba Province, and on the eastern slope of the Andean Mountain Range. Likewise, it is located 2430m/7970ft over sea level and is nestled in the subtropical zone at the edge of the rainforest. Therefore, it enjoys a benign climate, which is warm and humid. Finally, Machu Picchu, located at the summit of a mountain, harmonizes with the exuberant nature that surrounds it.

Furthermore, the Machu Picchu One Day Package includes an excursion through the outstanding Inca and Colonial sights in the lovely city of Cusco.

Cusco was the capital of the Incas until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. As a result, there are several Spanish constructions, built on impressive walls of ancient Inca buildings. In fact, many of them are considered architectural works of art, such as the cathedral and Temple of the Sun or Koricancha.

Finally, UNESCO also included the City of Cusco in the World Heritage List in 1983.

4 DAY MACHU PICCHU TOUR – OVERVIEW

The 4 Day Machu Picchu Tour offers you the opportunity to discover and experience closely the Inca history, legacy, and cultural ways which still endure in the present time.  Your Machu Picchu tour will take you through Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and finally the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu!

Your 4 Day Machu Picchu Tour will include:

  • An excursion through the outstanding Inca and Colonial sights in the lively city of Cusco.
  • A visit to the formidable and long lasting fortress of Sacsayhuaman.
  • Travelling across the gorgeous landscape the Sacred Valley of the Incas has to offer.
  • Shopping at the historical artisan market of Pisac.
  • Climbing up the stairs to the Wind shrine in the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo.
  • And finally your Machu Picchu Tour full day with the opportunity to hike the Huayna Picchu Mountain.

Machu Picchu, one of the most valued icons of Inca architectural prowess, is mistakenly referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas”. Even though its existence was known by the locals since the beginning of the 1900’s, it wasn’t until 1911 that Machu Picchu became known to the world.

Machu Picchu was constructed on top of a mountain, on the ridge (altitude: 2430m/7970ft above sea level), strategically harbored by the mountains surrounding it, as if the main purpose was to keep it hidden. When you finally lay your eyes on it, you know the trip was all worthwhile and the best way to spend your holidays!

Machu Picchu is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has received many awards and recognitions over the years, most recently TripAdvisor’s 2016 No. 1 Tourist Landmark around the World!

4 DAY MACHU PICCHU TOUR – ITINERARY

DAY 1

The city and surroundings of Cusco Tour

We will pick you up from the airport in Cusco and transfer you to your hotel (altitude: 3400m/11152ft).

Later in the day after you rest we will meet you at your hotel and begin your excursion in the city of Cusco. We will make a first stop at the Cathedral of Cusco, part of our colonial legacy considered of high importance amongst the catholic population in the present. Then, we will continue with Koricancha (or Temple of the Sun). It is considered one of the most important sacred Inca places within the city, which sheltered all Gods and Goddesses brought by the nations that integrated the Empire centuries ago.

After a short drive, we will be at the formidable archaeological complex of Sacsayhuaman, a magnificent stonework with finely cut polygonal blocks. A little further, we will stop at the archeological sites of Qenqo, Pucapucara, and Tambomachay. They are all part of the limits of the city in the old days, what nowadays we would call Customs checkpoint!  After this excursion, you will return to your hotel.

Evening free.

Overnight in Cusco.

DAY 2

The Sacred Valley of the Incas (altitude: 2800m/9184ft) and Aguas Calientes arrival

We will meet you at your hotel and we will begin the excursion by visiting the citadel of Pisac. It is an archeological site with extensive agricultural terraces which was naturally divided by the mountain ridges. Also, it is famous because of its impressive cemetery constituted by more than a thousand burial niches on a mountain wall. Later on, you will explore and perhaps shop in the historical artisan market located on the main plaza of the town of Pisac. Then, you will have a delicious lunch in the town of Yucay.

The tour continues to the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo, with an awe inspiring construction on a steep mountain. It was build for military, agricultural and religious control purposes as a watchtower over the Sacred Valley. Once you make it to the top, you may experience a sense of spiritual communion with nature. Also, you will be stepping in the Wind Shrine, which offers an incredible sight of the magnificent landscape along the Sacred Valley. The tour ends at around 16:00 to 17:00 hrs. Then, you will go to the Ollantaytambo Train Station to board the Expedition Train departing at 19:00hrs and arriving to Aguas Calientes at 20:45. At your arrival, a hotel staff member will take you to your hotel in Aguas Calientes.

From this point, you will feel as one of the few privileged visitors to admire this amazing and panoramic sight of the citadel. Moreover, you can visit the exciting grass rope Inca Bridge (optional), a secret entrance on the west side of Machu Picchu citadel during the golden time of the Incas.

Also, if you want to admire impressive panoramic views of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, we highly recommend you hike the Huayna Picchu Mountain and visit the Temple of the Moon, or hike the Machu Picchu Mountain (not included).

MACHU PICCHU TOUR – Q&A:

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

The best time of the year to visit Machu Picchu is from mid-April to mid-October. For more information click here.

What Kind of Clothing and Footwear Should I Bring?

Bring clothes you can use in layers so that you can adjust your body temperature depending on local conditions and time of day. Alternatively, you will also find excellent quality alpaca and llama wool products available in town, for easy wear and staying warm at night.

Bring a small foldable pouch, daypack or backpack to carry your valuables, a water bottle to keep you hydrated, and any extras like a light coat to be prepared for lighter temperature.

Daytime in the Andes can be extremely sunny and bright so bring sunglasses, a hat and some sunscreen. Lip moisturizer is also useful since the air is dry.

Hiking Machu Picchu requires proper footwear. Sturdy shoes with good ankle support or light hiking boots. Heavier hiking boots for the more extreme hikes like the Inca TrailSalkantay or Ausangate Mountain.

What to do about altitude sickness?

We strongly recommend you rest for at least 3 hours upon arrival to your hotel and limit food intake as digestion might be a bit slow during your first day. Also, many hotels offer a tea made with the leaves of the coca plant (considered a sacred plant in the Andes). It possesses the property to ease oxygen into the body blood cells and helps relieve altitude sickness.

You can also purchase “Sorocchi pill” or “Gravol” pills sold over-the-counter at drugstores and airports in Peru. However, the best thing you can do is to take a nap, eat lightly on the first day, drink lots of fluids, and avoid excessive physical or mental effort until acclimated. Most people do NOT have serious problems with the altitude, and only experience a mild headache and shortness of breath on the first day.

DAY 7

Transfer to Copacabana and Tour

Transfer to the town of Copacabana on Lake Titicaca (duration: 3 ½ – 4hours, altitude: 3840m / 12595ft).

Upon arrival, you will start your tour by visiting the Basilica, a stark, white, Moorish-looking building decorated with Portuguese-style blue tiles and rounded domes. The treasure inside is the Shrine de la Virgen de Copacabana — a statue carved during the 15th century which is said to be responsible for countless miracles. It is also belived that if she’s removed, Lake Titicaca will rise in rebellion and flood the town.

Next, you can take an optional walk through the 12 Stations of the Cross, as devout Catholics do throughout the Easter season. This uphill walk will help you understand the layout of the town and the position of nearby islands (duration: 1½ hours). The views of Lake Titicaca on the way up, and at the summit, are worth the exercise.

It is also worth noting that, in contrast to the strong Catholic influences found in Copacabana, you’ll also find Yatiris (Aymara masters) performing spiritual cleansings called “challas” or coca leaf readings on the streets.

Transfer to Sun Island

After your tour of Copacabana, you will be transferred by boat to the Port of Pilkokaina in the southern part of Sun Island on Lake Titicaca – the legendary birthplace of the Inca Empire – where you will be welcomed by the Lodge staff. Here, you will enjoy a traditional lunch, in the open air, called Apthapi, before continuing on your tour. After lunch, enjoy a smooth uphill walk with amazing views of the lake and a visit to the Inca ruins of Pilkokaina Palace along the way. The lodge is situated in the halfway up of the island and requires a smooth uphill walk with amazing views of the lake and a visit to the Inca ruins of Pilkokaina Palace along the way (duration: 45 minutes). From the lodge, behold an amazing sunset.

Evening free.

Overnight in the Sun Island.

BL, D (at your hotel)

DAY 8

Escalera del Inca and Transfer to Tiwanaku

After enjoying breakfast at the Eco-lodge, walk down to the Port of Yumani. On your way down, visit the Escalera del Inca, a stairway leading to the Inca Fountain once believed to be a fountain of youth. After a short trek with wonderful panoramic views of Lake Titicaca, you will take a boat back to Copacabana (duration: 1 hour) and then be transferred to Tiwanaku (duration: 3 – 4 hours).

Half-Day Tiwanaku Ruins and Transfer to La Paz

After lunch, you will visit the Spiritual and Political Centre of the Tiwanaku culture, which includes beautiful monumental stone buildings that survive in protected archaeological zones.
