Karina’s Story: What Inspired Her to Become a Guide?

“I’ve always had a great passion for history and culture, and I love sharing my enthusiasm with others. Becoming a tour guide allowed me to combine my love of knowledge with my desire to meet new people and help them discover fascinating places. The opportunity to tell stories and see the fascination on travelers’ faces is what truly inspired me to pursue this career.”

Memorable Moments on Tour

One of Karina’s most memorable experiences as a guide involved a traveler searching for spiritual portals in Cusco.
“I took him to Ñaupa Iglesia, a place that very few people visit. It was incredible to witness his immediate connection to the site. At Sacsayhuamán, he even predicted my second pregnancy in front of one of the megalithic stones, which he considered a three-dimensional portal. It was a surreal and unforgettable moment.”

Karina also recalls handling challenges with calm and foresight:
“During a strike, I picked up my passengers much earlier than planned to avoid roadblocks. This allowed us to reach the train station and board the last train to Machu Picchu before all services were canceled. The passengers didn’t miss their visit, and they were so grateful for the effort to make their trip seamless.”

Favorite Local Experiences

  • Favorite Local Dish: Cuy (guinea pig), a Peruvian delicacy.
  • Hidden Gem in Peru: Choquequirao, an archaeological site often called the “sister city” of Machu Picchu.
  • Leisure Time: “When I’m not guiding, I enjoy cooking and watching movies.”

Tips for First-Time Visitors to Peru

  • Altitude Acclimatization: “Take a few days to adjust if visiting high-altitude destinations like Cusco or Machu Picchu. Drink plenty of water and eat light meals.”
  • Cuisine: “Try Peruvian dishes like ceviche, lomo saltado, and ají de gallina.”
  • Local Etiquette: “In rural areas, always ask permission before taking photos of people or their homes. If someone offers you food or drink, it’s polite to accept—it’s a gesture of hospitality.”
  • Cultural Awareness: “Respect the rules at religious or ceremonial sites like Machu Picchu. It’s important to behave respectfully.”

What Makes Peru Unique?

“Peru is incredibly diverse, both culturally and geographically. From the iconic ruins of Machu Picchu to the biodiversity of the Amazon and the vibrant markets in Cusco and Lima, there’s something for everyone. Our gastronomy is world-renowned, blending indigenous, colonial, and modern influences. But what makes Peru truly special is the warmth of its people and the living traditions in every corner of the country.”

Reflections on Being a Guide

“What I love most about being a tour guide in Peru is the opportunity to share our rich history and impressive diversity with visitors. Every day brings new perspectives and fascinating conversations. Seeing the wonder in travelers’ eyes when they explore Machu Picchu or immerse themselves in Andean culture is incredibly rewarding.”

If Karina could take a traveler to one place, it would be Machu Picchu:
“This iconic site encapsulates the majesty of the Inca civilization and their harmony with nature. The architecture, natural surroundings, and mystical atmosphere create an experience that leaves a lasting impression.”

Fun and Lighthearted Insights

  • Superpower Wish: “If I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to teleport tourists instantly between destinations. This would let them experience even more of Peru without the worry of long travel times.”
  • Favorite Season: “I love the dry season (May–October). The weather is perfect for hiking and exploring sites like Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley.”
  • Dream Tourist Day: “I’d start with breakfast at a cozy hotel, take the luxurious Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu, and spend the day exploring its magic. In the evening, I’d return to Lima, reflecting on an unforgettable day in the land of the Incas.”
