    Waqrapukara Peru Tour is a stunning full-day visit to the archaeological site of Waqrapukara located at the top of a great ravine covered with forests that crown the abysses that dominate the Apurimac River Canyon. This is, this Waqrapukara Peru Tour is perfect for travelers with minimal time looking for a unique experience of the traditional sites, rich in history and surrounded by vast beauty with astonishing landscapes.

    Waqrapukara name means “The Horned Fortress” in the native Quechua language, referring to the two distinctly horn-shaped peaks which dominate the site. Archaeologists have only recently studied this fortress, so the full significance of the complex is just beginning to be uncovered. They believe that this powerful archaeological site was at one point used for astronomical observation and rituals as well as for the development of agriculture as the buildings are facing westward. Within the stone structures, you will also see vaulted niches with three jambs, which is an evidence of its particular importance, as the Incas only placed this style of doors at seats of great religious and political power.

    1. DAY 1 WAQRAPUKARA TREK

      You will be picked up from your hotel in Cusco to travel through the highlands of southern Cusco. Along the way, we will find the Pomacanchi Lagoon known as one of the second largest lagoons in the Cusco region. Continuing with our tour, we will pass through Sangarara District (altitude: 3763m/12342.64ft above sea level) within the Acomayo Province until we reach our starting trek point. From here, we will trek 8 Km to the archeological site (duration: 1 1/2 hour).

      Upon arrival at Waqrapukara (altitude: 4150m/13612ft above sea level), we will have some rest and enjoy a boxed lunch. After your guided tour, we will start our hike back by a different route toward the town of Huayqui, admiring cave paintings that illustrate lamas along the way.

      Then, we will find our private transportation at the end of the trail after three hours of hiking approximately. And finally, we will finish our trip returning to Cusco arriving in late afternoon.

      Level of difficulty: Challenging.

      IMPORTANT: the hike back can be by the same route to Sangarara, which takes between 1 1/2 – 2 hours approx., but you would not see the cave paintings. Another option is returning by the third route towards the village of Campi, which is 2 1/2 hours approx. You can choose the option of your preference with your guide before starting to hike. Level of difficulty: Average.
