    1. DAY 1 Trip to Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca Peru

We will meet at the hotel lobby at 05:00 hours and will travel for about 3 hours, passing through traditional villages and having amazing views of the Andes with its diverse flora and fauna.

Breakfast will be served on the way, and we will continue our way to the Vinicunca community. Once there, we will start our trek at 4200 m / 13 780 ft and will hike uphill for about 2 hours until we reach the famous Rainbow Mountain.

Along the way, you will enjoy the natural beauty of the Andes, with its glacial peaks, red mountains and rocky hills. As you head to the summit of the mountain, you may spot some Andean wildlife like llamas and alpacas grazing along the valley.

      Rainbow Mountain

Once we arrive at the top of Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, you will have enough time to absorb its majesty and the different color hues ranging from red, green and gold. It was not discovered long time ago, when the ice covering the mountain melted, and it unveiled the beautiful palette of natural colors.

You will also see the snow-capped peaks of Ausangate right in front of you, which is part of the Vilcanota mountain range and is the highest mountain in the Cusco region (just below 6402 m / 21 000 ft).

After taking the best pictures, we will begin our descent for about 1½  – 2 hours. We will have lunch on our way back to Cusco, and finally return to the hotel at around 16:30 hours.

From April to October, there is less chance of rain. May and June are the coldest months, and it could be snowy. The warmer months are September and October.

Concerning the time, the best time to do the trek is in the morning, when is less crowded and temperature is more pleasant.

This trek is moderate because of the steep inclines and is recommended for people in good hiking shape. Just take your time during the ascent, otherwise it is possible to rent a horse part of the way (not included in the price). Remember that you should spend some days acclimating to the altitude before the trek because you will be hiking at a very high elevation.

Palcoyo demands a less strenuous hike which can be done in a shorter time (45 minutes versus 2 hours) and it is suitable for families, although it is located a bit farther than Vinicunca.

Vinicunca is a more popular and crowded destination, while Palccoyo is still a bit unknown.

If you’re interested in a more challenging trek, then Vinicunca may be the right one for you.
