Choquequirao Peru Trek: Discover a Mysterious Inca Refuge

Choquequirao Peru is an amazingly preserved Inca outpost found on a lesser known Inca Trail that is 60 km / 38 miles long. The city is still in the cleaning and restoration process, as it is still partially covered by weeds that accumulated over the centuries. This adds to its charm and makes for an authentic experience, as it feels you’re discovering the archeological site for the first time. The Choquequirao Trek is a great alternative to the sometimes-overcrowded traditional Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Choquequirao Peru or (“Crade of God” in Quechua) is situated at (3,103m/10,178ft) above sea level and is considered Machu Picchu’s “sister” city for it was roughly the same size as Machu Picchu, and it is believed to have also been an important religious, political, and economic center for the Incas. Its architecture is as impressive as that of its more famous sister city with the added bonus of not having crowds of people around to interrupt the beautiful scenery nor the peaceful ambiance.  Here you can really take in the genius of the Inca architecture and feel their mystical energy.  It is hard to believe that very few people know about Choquequirao, and even fewer adventurous spirits opt to take the challenging 4-day round-trip hike to the city.
