Escape to Huchuy Qosqo Trek Cusco

HUCHUY QOSQO TREK CUSCO – OVERVIEW

Huchuy Qosqo Trek Cusco is an excellent option for trekkers with too little time to go for a longer trek, yet avid to hike on an Inca path first hand. The varied landscape and incredible views make this challenging trek an exciting experience.

Huchuy Qosqo means “Little Cusco,” located in the north of Cusco, facing the imposing Vilcanota Mountain range in the Sacred Valley at 3600m/11800ft. It was initially called Kakya Qawani, built during the reign of Viracocha. It comprises a ceremonial open center, the Kallanka (Great Wall) 40m long, grain storage structures, and a long lasting Inca-built irrigation channel, lined with stones for about 800m, that provides water to the site. An important agricultural and administrative center along with Pisac during the Inca period.

Huchuy Qosqo can only be reached by foot or horse riding.  The access from Tauca is 3 hours long, more or less, up to a mountain pass of 4500m, and then you hike your way down through a rocky and dusty path to Huchuy Qosqo. Horseback ride or two-day hike to Huchuy Qosqo is available at request.

HUCHUY QOSQO TREK CUSCO – ITINERARY

We will pick you up from your hotel and drive to Chinchero to then reach Tauca town, our starting point of the trek. We will start hiking uphill with a marvelous view of majestic mountains surrounding us and the peace inspiring Piuray Lagoon until the pass at 4500m/14760ft. Afterward, we will descend along a restored Inca road for approximately one hour towards the homestead of Pukamarca (altitude: 4010m/13153ft). Keep on hiking downhill to Leon Punku canyon, leading us to an Inca bridge and trail. Along the way, you can appreciate the surprising rock formations and natural boulders channeling the river to Huchuy Qosqo (altitude: 3600m/11808ft), where we will arrive by early afternoon.

Once in Huchuy Qosqo, you will enjoy a detailed guided tour and then, you will have free time to explore more on your own meanwhile you receive the energies of this archaeological site.

Later,  we will hike to the town of Lamay (altitude: 3000m/9840ft) to finally  drive you back to your hotel in Cusco (duration: 6-7 hours).

AUTHENTIC PACHAMAMA OFFERING CEREMONY – OVERVIEW

The Pachamama offering is a true Andean ceremony experience to give thanks to Mother Earth (or the Pachamama) with the guidance of a Shaman, an Andean priest. The Pachamama Offering Ceremony is part of a system of reciprocity between the material world and the spiritual world. According to Andean beliefs, it helps establish balance in our lives.

The ceremony itself is an offering of small amounts of native Andean seeds, grains, and fruits, together with coca leaves. During the ceremony, the Apus, or sacred mountain deities, and the four elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire are invoked. In addition, the three levels of life (hanan pacha: the world above, kay pacha: this world, and ukhu pacha: the underworld) are represented by the components of the offering. Finally, a ritual toast (challa) is made with chicha de jora (native corn beer). The final step of the ceremony is the burning of the offerings so that they can return to their origins, rising into the sky while the remaining ashes are buried in the earth to complete the cycle.

The Pachamama Offering Ceremony takes place at your hotel or at a temple and will last between 2 and 3 hours.

INCA TRAIL EXPRESS TO MACHU PICCHU – OVERVIEW

The Inca Trail Express to Machu Picchu is for trekkers with little time to hike the Inca Trail or the ones that do not wish to walk the traditional 4 day trek, yet are eager to live the one-in-a-lifetime experience of hiking to Machu Picchu while accesing it through the Inti Punku (Sun Gate) and admire a first glimpse of this architectonic marvel from the distance.

Right from the beginning of the Inca Trail Express to Machu Picchu, you will be startled by the changing landscape and climates as you reach Wiñay Wayna a superb site because of its capricious structure, yet with a very specific function: to take as much advantage of the land as possible. Build on a steep hillside overlooking the Urubamba River, comprises an upper and lower house structures surrounded by agricultural terraces.

From Wiñay Wayna, you will continue along a splendid and colorful trail and right before you lose your breath climbing up a steep flight of stairs on the last bit of the trail, you will have reached Intipunku (Sun Gate) and Machu Picchu will majestically reveal itself right in front of your eyes. A short downhill walk will lead you to the citadel to meet your tour guide and to begin your Machu Picchu Tour.

INCA TRAIL EXPRESS TO MACHU PICCHU – ITINERARY

As you travel along on the train, you will witness a dramatic change in the scenery, as you lower from the Sacred Valley to the beginning of the jungle.

Once you arrive in Km104, before you commence your hike, you will be asked to register your name for administrative ends. Then you’ll start walking up a hill, while you enjoy a pleasant warm weather, with breezes of fresh air and the magnificent landscape unwinding in front of you, a variety of plants, flowers and birds along the way, you might even see Viscachas (rabbit-like Chinchillas) and Spectacled Bears (if lucky!) as you keep on hiking, until you arrive in Wiñay Wayna, where you will take a short break to freshen up, visit the site, and register once again at their checkpoint so you may continue your hike to Machu Picchu.

DAY 2

Machu Picchu Full-day tour and back to Cusco:
Early in the morning, you will take the bus up to the imposing Machu Picchu complex. Your tour guide will meet you there. You’ll learn about its history, how it came to be, its many functions and its social and mystical meaning within the Andean society.

After the tour, if you’re the adventurous kind, you can hike the Huayna Picchu Mountain (the entrance fee is not included in the tour price and the number of people admitted is limited), and contemplate Machu Picchu from a different perspective and also visit the Temple of the Moon (not included in the tour price). After lunch, you can visit the Inca Bridge or once again climb up to the Inti Punku and admire the view.

Later on you can take the bus down (last bus departs at 17:30) to Aguas Calientes, on your own. Depending on the time your train back to Poroy/Ollantaytambo station (not included in the tour price) is schedule to leave, you can take the chance to explore a little bit of what Aguas Calientes has to offer, such as Hot Springs at the top of one of the main streets, or take a walk to their natural museum, etc. You should go on your own to the train station to hop on your train back to Poroy/Ollantaytambo Station (20min/90min respectively from the City of Cusco) There a driver will be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it to take you to your hotel in Cusco.

My friends had the most amazing time on all of their travels. All I heard was happy stories and lots of smiles and laughs.
Intense Peru completed helping with all of the travels for everyone that came to my wedding in Peru! They organized over 10 different groups of people and not only customized all the trips but organized people together so all of our friends got to know each other. Big thanks to Gloria and Sofia!!
Thank you for planning everything for my friends and keeping me up to date on all of their travel plans. Your work made all my wedding logistics much easier! Thanks!!
I can’t wait till next time I am in Peru and can do a tour too!

CLorraine and I had a wonderful time. Everything was as you said it would be, smooth and comfortable with knowledgeable guides. You had no control over rain in Machu Picchu or the mudslide two days earlier to prevent train delays in Cusco. My two days on my own were great as well. You have given me the courage to never fear going on my own! There have been at least 3 people at Air Canada, Toronto who are possibly interested in our type of trip….for sure, I will gladly give them your email and number for them to work with you.

It was the trip of a lifetime.
