It is at 4,150 meters / 13,612 feet deep and for this reason, is considered as one of the deepest canyons in the world. CHONTA PERU HIKE – OVERVIEW

Chonta Peru Hike is an incredible journey to the Apurimac canyon where you will observe the Andean condor flight (Vultur gryphus).  See them soar in all their splendor while enjoying amazing Andean scenery.

The Andean condor is the largest flying land bird in the Western Hemisphere. They have a wing span of around 3 meters and a body weight of 15 kg approximately. The Andean condor can fly higher than 8,000 meters and lose our sight.

In Andean cosmology, the andean condor is the messenger of the gods who also transports the souls of the departed into the spirit realms. The Apus or tutelary spirits may also appear to human beings in the form of a condor. To come in contact with this powerful animal is a deeply transformative experience that may impact our soul.

CHONTA PERU HIKE – ITINERARY

Pick-up from the lobby of your hotel. We leave Cusco by private transport at 8:00 am. and travel through the highlands of Anta towards the Northwest. After passing the pass of Willque we descend into the beautiful Limatambo valley and on most days, we may enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Salkantay, the second highest Apu of the region (6272 m). Near Limatambo town we take a well-preserved dirt road up to the picturesque highland hamlet of Chonta. Time permitting, we shall briefly visit the local school that benefits from our tours through the donation of materials, before starting our two-hour trek (moderate difficulty). With a little luck we may spot typical highland birds on the way (sometimes even parrots can be seen), whilst appreciating the pretty flora and the spectacular scenery as we approach the canyon.

A short hike downhill will take us to the viewpoint in time for a delicious picnic lunch. We shall stay at this marvelous spot for 2-3 hours in order to wait for the Andean condors to soar upwards, being transported by thermal winds. This is an unforgettable birding experience and a highlight for every nature enthusiast! in the early afternoon we start our hike back to Chonta. On the way, we shall visit the archaeological Inka complex of Tarawasi and the mysterious ceremonial site of Killarumiyoq where we shall enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing our journey to Cusco where we shall arrive in the afternoon.

WAQRAPUKARA TREK – OVERVIEW

Waqrapukara Trek is a stunning full day visit to the archaeological site of Waqrapukara located at the top of a great ravine covered with forests that crown the abysses that dominate the Apurimac River Canyon. This is, this trek is perfect for travelers with minimal time looking for an unique experience off the traditional sites, rich in history and surrounded by vast beauty with astonishing landscapes.

Its name means “The Horned Fortress” in the native Quechua language, referring to the two distinctly horn-shaped peaks which dominate the site. Archaeologists have only recently studied this fortress, so the full significance of the complex is just beginning to be uncovered. They believe that this powerful archaeological site was at one point used for astronomical observation and rituals as well as for the development of agriculture as the buildings are westward facing. Within the stone structures, you will also see vaulted niches with three jambs, which is an evidence of its particular importance, as the Incas only placed this style of doors at seats of great religious and political power.

WAQRAPUKARA TREK – ITINERARY

You will be picked up from your hotel in Cusco to travel through the highlands of southern Cusco. Along the way, we will find the Pomacanchi Lagoon known as one of the second largest lagoons in the Cusco region. Continuing with our tour, we will pass through Sangarara District (altitude: 3763m/12342.64ft above sea level) within the Acomayo Province until we reach our starting trek point. From here, we will trek 8 Km to the archeological site (duration: 1 1/2 hour).

Upon arrival at Waqrapukara (altitude: 4150m/13612ft above sea level), we will have some rest and enjoy a boxed lunch. Afterwards, your guided tour, we will start our hike back by a different route toward the town of Huayqui, admiring cave paintings that illustrate lamas along the way.

Then, we will find our private transportation at the end of the trail after three hours of hiking approximately. And finally, we will finish our trip returning to Cusco arriving late afternoon.

Level of difficulty: Challenging.

IMPORTANT: the hike back can be by the same route to Sangarara, which takes between 1 1/2 – 2 hours approx., but you would not see the cave paintings. Another option is returning by the third route towards the village of Campi, which is 2 1/2 hours approx. You can choose the option of your preference with your guide before starting to hike. Level of difficulty: Average.
